About the Doctor

The single most important factor in the success of plastic surgery is the surgeon you select. That is why you need to know about the training and experience of your plastic surgeon. Dr. Alfonso Barrera has been in plastic surgery practice in Houston, Texas since 1985 and is a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify plastic surgeons. He received his medical degree from the University of Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico, and has subsequently completed 7 years of postgraduate surgical training as follows General Surgery at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Texas (1978 – 1980), Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts (1980 – 1983), and Plastic Surgery at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, Texas (1983 – 1985). In addition, Dr. Barrera is currently the President of the Houston Society of Plastic Surgeons and Chairman of the Plastic Surgery Section – Department of Surgery at Memorial Hospital, Memorial City in Houston. He has written numerous publications in national journals and textbooks in plastic surgery, and has also presented scientific papers and courses in plastic surgery at a national level.
