WebMD recently sat down with ISHRS’ Dr. Kenneth Washenik to discuss the many treatments in the works. “The development of new treatments, including drugs and cell-based approaches for hair loss, is at an all-time high,” states Kenneth J. Washenik, MD, PhD.

At the American Academy of Dermatology’s annual meeting in March, various treatment topics were highlighted.

Cell based hair follicle regeneration – taking cells found around hair follicles and growing them in a lab.

Latisse – FDA approved drug that helps eyelash growth may help hair growth on the scalp.

Combination Therapy – where combining a drug like Latisse and a medication used to treat allergies and asthma. The medication blocks a hormone like substance that prevents hair from growing. This may help with hair growth.

FDA Approved Medications – Medication options like Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia) to help treat hair loss.

At-Home Treatments – Low level laser light helmets and combs are a convenient and easy treatment option.

Hair Transplants – This is the best option for some patients and technology today allows for a minimally invasive procedure.

With so many innovative technologies, it’s no wonder why more men and women seek help for their hair loss or thinning hair; especially with results being natural looking.
