ISHRS SALUTES TWO CELEBRATED MEMBERS WITH PRESTIGIOUS FOLLICLE AWARDS FOR ADVANCING EXCELLENCE IN HAIR RESTORATION SURGERY
CHICAGO – Dec. 14, 2021. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) recently honored two surgeons for their significant contributions to the field of hair restoration surgery during its 29th World Congress, which was a hybrid meeting held in-person in Lisbon, Portugal, in October 2021, and virtually from November 2021 through February 2022.
“The Society’s annual follicle awards spotlight the laudable achievements of two members who have raised the bar in refining the art and science of hair restoration,” said Paul McAndrews, MD, FISHRS, Immediate Past President. “Our members reveled in the chance to honor these two distinguished award recipients in-person this year, as we all felt so fortunate to be together once again.”
The ISHRS Golden Follicle Award is bestowed annually to a physician who has made outstanding and significant clinical or educational contributions related to the field of hair restoration surgery. The 2021 Golden Follicle Award was awarded to Marcelo Pitchon, MD, a plastic surgeon from Brazil, practicing in his Belo Horizonte and São Paulo offices.
An ardent supporter of ISHRS since its inception, Dr. Pitchon has served as a faculty member at almost every ISHRS World Congress for the last two decades and was the chairman of the 2016 ISHRS World Congress. The first student of Dr. Bobby Limmer, known as the “father” of modern hair transplantation, Dr. Pitchon learned hair transplantation extensively under him in San Antonio, Texas. Known throughout the world as an educator and an innovator, Dr. Pitchon has dedicated his plastic surgery career exclusively to hair transplantation.
He is the author of the Preview Long Hair Transplantation technique that has been adopted by hair restoration surgeons worldwide for enabling totally unshaven hair transplantation with implantation of long hairs with in-surgery vision of a “preview” of the final result. He has served on several committees of the ISHRS, was president of the Brazilian Association of Hair Restoration Surgery, is a member of multiple medical societies, and is widely published.
The ISHRS Platinum Follicle Award is given for outstanding achievement in basic or clinical research, or an invention or discovery, or furthering techniques and methods in a profound way that has resulted in the advancement of the field of hair restoration. The 2021 Platinum Follicle Award was presented to Roberto Trivellini, Sr., MD, of Paraguay.
With over 30 years experience in hair restoration, Dr. Trivellini has dedicated his career over the past decade to the highly specialized technique known as Follicular Unit Excision (FUE). He is the creator of the multiphasic FUE device, function, punch and technique to make FUE with long hair, which have improved and accelerated the procedure worldwide.
An active member of the ISHRS, Dr. Trivellini has served as a member the ISHRS FUE Advancement Committee and Membership Committee. He is the founder and past president of the Paraguayan Society of Hair Restoration and Surgery and the founder of the Latin American FUE Workshop. Dr. Trivellini has authored numerous journal articles and textbook chapters on his FUE innovations and techniques.
