Dr. Nilofer Farjo spoke with UK dermatologist Dr. Sharon Wong, BSc (Hons), MBBS (Distinct), MRCP (UK) DERM who is recognized in the specialty as combining medical trichology with dermatology. Because of her specialist interest in hair and scalp disorders and her experience with complex conditions particularly among Asian and Afro-Caribbean patients this makes her one of London’s most sought-after specialists. She is a member of the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), the British Hair and Nail Society (BHNS) and the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery (BAHRS).

She is a spokesperson for the British Skin Foundation and has worked alongside Alopecia UK as an advisor on the development of e-learning modules for GPs on hair loss. Dr. Wong’s desire to work collaboratively with allied professionals to ensure that all patients with hair loss feel supported medically, psychologically and cosmetically inspired her to create the first ever Get Ahead of Hair Loss campaign. ‘Get Ahead of Hair Loss’ is a charitable foundation which holds public educational events. By bringing together experts in hair science, dermatology, trichology, hairdressing, cosmetic camouflage, and psychology it seeks to raise awareness and create conversation with the public.

Another of Dr. Wong’s accomplishments is her appearance on BBC’s Diagnosis Detectives in September 2020. As part of a panel of 12 leading medical experts, she helped to diagnose patients with life-changing symptoms. In the interview, they discussed psychological aspects of hair loss and the emerging concern around post-COVID-19 hair loss and appropriate treatment.
