A recent Men’s Health reported in a Spanish study, 62% of men who were balding experienced a loss of self-esteem as a result of their hair falling out. University of Pennsylvania researcher, Albert Mannes, Ph.D. states “hair loss is associated with aging and thick hair has always been associated with youth and masculinity.”  Male-pattern baldness is genetically driven and nearly two-thirds of men who inherit the “baldness gene” suffer from their genetic fate.

Men’s Health says there are these 8 ways to stop hair falling out:

  1. Find The Cause – ISHRS’ Dr. Marc Avram suggests seeing a dermatologist as soon as thinning begins so you can have a scalp biopsy to rule out worrisome triggers.
  2. Side With The Science – Stick with products/drugs that are FDA approved and clinically tested.
  3. Switch Shampoo’s – Use a shampoo that contains Ketoconazole, an antifungal used to fight dandruff.  This helps reduce the production of testosterone and DHT in the hair follicles.
  4. Eat Smarter – Avoid fried foods and reduce the amount of heavy sugar intake.
  5. Join The Transplant List – The surgical procedures have come a long way from the old “plug” look. FUT and FUE are good options. Dr. Alan Bauman with ISHRS suggests finding a qualified surgeon who specializes in hair loss.
  6. Grow Toward The Light – Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) is an option for those suffering mild to moderate hair loss.
  7. Do An About-Face – Acceptance takes the stress out of hair loss.  Dr. Dirk Kranz, Ph.D. says “Interpret balding as a distinctive look or a sign of maturity rather than as a sign of aging.”
  8. Dump Your Comb – No more comb overs. A Mannes’s research reveals that a guy with a shaved head is viewed as taller, more masculine, and more dominant.
