CHICAGO – Nov. 14, 2022. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) recently honored two surgeons for their significant contributions to the field of hair restoration surgery during its 30th World Congress, held in person in Panama City, Panama, October 27-29, 2022.

“The Society’s annual follicle awards recognize two members who have shown commitment and ingenuity for advancing excellence in hair restoration surgery over the course of their esteemed careers,” said Nilofer Farjo, MBChB, FISHRS, Immediate Past President. “Our members hold these awards in the highest regard, and everyone in attendance was eager to celebrate the achievements of these two revered award recipients.”

The ISHRS Golden Follicle Award is bestowed annually to a physician who has made outstanding and significant clinical or educational contributions related to the field of hair restoration surgery. The 2022 Golden Follicle Award was awarded to Samuel M. Lam, MD, FISHRS, a practicing facial plastic surgeon and hair restoration surgeon from Dallas, Texas, USA. As an educator and innovator, Dr. Lam served as president of the ABHRS in 2021 and spearheaded its successful Capital Campaign. Always willing to share his knowledge, Dr. Lam has served as chair of the ISHRS Basics Course and Advanced/Board Review Course and as the Workshop Chair for the ISHRS’s 2015 World Congress. For the past 12 years, he has led a hands-on cadaver workshop at Saint Louis University Practical Anatomy and Surgical Education in collaboration with the ISHRS on hair transplantation training and education geared toward newer surgeons in the field. In addition, Dr. Lam has written and/or edited nine textbooks on hair restoration surgery.

The ISHRS Platinum Follicle Award is given for outstanding achievement in basic or clinical research, or an invention or discovery, or furthering techniques and methods in a profound way that has resulted in the advancement of the field of hair restoration. The 2022 Platinum Follicle Award was presented to plastic surgeon Jae-Hyun Park, MD, PhD, of Seoul, South Korea. With over 18 years’ experience in hair restoration, Dr. Park is a prolific writer and has published numerous articles in the plastic surgery and dermatologic surgery literature. His publications have contributed to improving knowledge in the correction and design of female hairlines, non-shaven follicular unit excision (FUE), long-hair FUE, scalp micropigmentation, scalp laxity, and graft survival. In addition, he implements surgical devices and tools with the goal of improving the ergonomics of FUE surgery. A member of the ISHRS for 15 years, Dr. Park is a frequent presenter at the ISHRS World Congresses where he shares his skills and knowledge on the latest advances in hair restoration surgery. Dr. Park is also an active member of several medical specialty societies in South Korea, including the Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and the Craniofacial Society.
