GENEVA, IL (October 4, 2017) Leading experts in hair restoration surgery will discuss emerging therapies and the latest trends in hair restoration surgery at the 25th World Congress hosted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) October 4 to 7, 2017, in Prague. Preceding the conference is a World Live Surgery Workshop, October 1-2, 2017 in Polanica Zdrój, Poland.

“We are experiencing an international influx in hair restoration procedures, with a 60 percent increase since 2014,” said Jean M. Devroye, MD, FISHRS of Belgium, program chair for the 2017 World Congress. “As surgery becomes more commonplace, the mission of our organization is elevated. The ISHRS sets the highest standards of medical practice, medical ethics, and research in medical and surgical hair restoration. Our 25th World Congress brings hair restoration experts from across the globe, to provide exceptional medical education.”

Nearly 1,000 medical professionals will attend hundreds of sessions taught by worldwide experts. Topics include the latest in hair restoration research, updates on surgical and medical techniques to treat hair loss, and the newest approaches for launching and operating a hair restoration surgery practice.

At the World Live Surgery Workshop, attendees will be immersed in follicular unit extraction (FUE), a popular method used to harvest and transplant hair. Experts will provide detailed technical explanations while performing surgical procedures. Sessions will also focus on patient planning and logistics, equipment selection, ergonomics and optimizing staff resources. This learning experience is designed for intermediate/advanced hair restoration physicians.

Highlights from the World Live Surgery Workshop will be shared with Congress attendees in Prague. Discussions will focus on various FUE punches and techniques, robotic-assisted FUE, and long hair procedures as well as a compare-and-contrast session on FUE and follicular unit transplantation-strip method (FUT).

Some of the more advanced and unique topics aligned for this year’s Congress include:

  • Hair Biology Symposium with distinguished faculty presenting their latest research and newest approaches for stimulating hair growth and reversing hair miniaturization. A diverse panel of experts will lead a think tank discussion and share practical ideas for applying the newest information about hair biology in real-world patient settings.
  • Hair Follicle Neoformation: The Past, Present and Future of Hair Cloning with a review of hair cloning, a procedure during which scientists can make new fully functional hair follicles in the lab from just a few cells. The technique is just being tested but is expected to move forward with practical applications for humans in the future.
  • Transgender Transplantation with a focus on the rights and needs of the LGBTQ community as increasing numbers of individuals seek services to achieve physical change. Hairline feminization and facial hair transplant procedures have improved and provide natural-looking results when performed correctly by a trained physician. The session will also focus on HRS surgical indications and techniques which are critically important aspects of transgender care. In its just-released 2017 Practice Census, the ISHRS found that one-quarter of physician respondents indicated an increase in transgender hair transplants.
