Did you know that your hair could show you early signs of health issues? Read how these 7 symptoms can show a bigger picture:
Dry/Brittle Hair
Heated styling aids like flat irons, can certainly add to the dryness of your hair. If you see large damaged areas or breakage and shedding, it could be a sign of dehydration. Drink more water and cut down on caffeinated drinks.
Very dry and brittle hair could also be a sign of thyroid imbalance. Seek medical advise as this may be only signs of a mild imbalance which can be treated by eating healthy and lowering stress.
Dandruff/Scaly Scalp
Dry flakey scalp and dandruff are very common for many individuals. It becomes more of a concern when dandruff is severe as it could indicate a weak immune system.
Thinning Hair
30% of women experience thinning hair during menopause due to the hormonal imbalance. There are treatments available like hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that can help. Talk to you doctor about the underlying cause and if HRT is best for you.
Premature Graying
Most people can blame genetics for their gray hair. However, if you see more graying at a young age than other family members, it could be caused by hormonal or stress factors. Your body could be depleted of Vitamin B which can affect you hair.
Short Hairs On Top
If you see that you have short hairs on top of your head and experience breakage, this could be due to a low protein diet. Not enough protein means your hair becomes less resistant to chemicals and heat thus breaking off.
Balding along the hairline
Traction alopecia occurs when the hair is pulled tightly into braids, dreadlock, weaves or a ponytail. This causes damage to the hair follicles. If caught early enough, your hair follicles may recover and hair will begin to grow.
Receding Hair
Receding hair can happen to both men and women and the causes can vary. Crash diets and poor nutrition can play into a receding hairline in young men. For women who suffer from a condition called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a receding hairline is often common.
If you see a change in your hair, you might want to consult with a physician to address any concerns.
