New International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery survey shows most men with hair loss seek treatment between ages 30-39
GENEVA, IL. – August 6, 2013.As new dad Prince William rolls up his sleeves to embrace a “down-to-earth” style of parenting, this young Royal will share many of the same stresses that can leave dads from all walks of life feeling and looking older than their years.
“It’s not uncommon for new parents to feel overwhelmed by the change in their routine and the uncertainty that can follow the birth of a child,” said Carlos J. Puig, DO, president of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS). “While moms may feel pressure to regain their pre-baby bodies, new dads are not immune to feeling self-conscious about their appearance – especially dads with thinning hair, which can make them appear much older in the countless photos that capture their early days with baby.”
According to results released today of a new member survey conducted by the ISHRS, Prince William was voted the celebrity for whom ISHRS members would most like to perform a hair transplant. Garnering 40.1 percent of votes, Prince William edged out Tiger Woods, Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Costner and Vladimir Putin.
The survey also highlights that at 31-years-old, Prince William is within the age range when most men seek hair restoration surgery. The survey found that ISHRS members reported that men between the ages of 30-39 years old accounted for the highest percentage of patients (30.9 percent) seeking hair restoration surgery, and more than half (59.6 percent) of male patients fell between the ages of 30 to 49 years old.
Hair restoration surgery, in which hair from the back of the head is moved to the area of hair loss via one of a handful of highly refined, proven surgical techniques, has increased steadily over the years for men and women looking to restore their hair. From 2004 to 2012, the number of surgical hair restoration procedures performed worldwide increased 85 percent.
While a hair transplant is the most common surgical treatment for hair loss today, it is not the only approach to treating hair loss. Nonsurgical treatments include using Minoxidil (Rogaine®) applied topically to the scalp in 2% or 5% solution or a 5% foam, or an orally-administered prescription medication Finasteride (Propecia®) that influences the response of scalp hair follicles to androgenic hormones. In recent years, Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) – also known as cold laser therapy, laser biostimulation or phototherapy – has been emerged as another possible treatment option for hair loss.
“Many factors such as degree of hair loss, rapidity of hair loss, pattern of hair loss and response to medical treatment determine which course of treatment or combination of treatments may produce the best results. That’s why it’s important to consult a hair restoration physician who can discuss the options specific to your hair loss. The key is to seek treatment early, before hair loss progresses,” Dr. Puig added.
For young dads with thinning hair like Prince William, state-of-the-art hair restoration technologies can present natural-looking results, virtually no trace of scarring, and minimal downtime – allowing these dads to feel better about their appearance and quickly get back to all the duties of fatherhood.
“If Prince William decides one day that his hair loss has become a royal pain, one of the more than 1,000 ISHRS physicians around the world would be pleased to provide the highest level of treatment – fit for a king,” said Dr. Puig.
