Extrapolated Number of Hair Restoration Procedures Worldwide

 

GENEVA, IL. – August 6, 2013.

An estimated 310,624 surgical hair restoration procedures were performed worldwide in 2012 (a 10% increase from 2010)

  • In the United States, 88,304 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Canada, 10,758 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Mexico/Central & South America, 15,611 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Europe, 54,343 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Asia, 102,702 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In Australia, 3,820 hair restoration procedures were performed
  • In the Middle East, 35,086 hair restoration procedures were performed

*The “average fee” charged for a procedure reported by survey participants and used in this calculation represents the overall average fee charged to all patients treated. Since the cost of procedures performed on individual patients may vary depending on the number of grafts and several other factors, the “average fee” as it related to this survey did not represent what all patients would expect to pay for a procedure, and should not be construed as a typical price for a hair restoration procedure.

  • The extrapolated worldwide number of hair restoration patients treated in 2012 was approximately 971,460 (285,425 surgical patients and 686,035 non-surgical patients) – a 5% increase from 2010
    • In the United States, 251,035 hair restoration patients were treated
    • In Canada, 51,341 hair restoration patients were treated
    • In Mexico/Central & South America, 37,024 hair restoration patients were treated
    • In Europe, 101,928 hair restoration patients were treated
    • In Asia, 395,982 hair restoration patients were treated
    • In Australia, 7,010 hair restoration patients were treated
    • In the Middle East, 127,139 hair restoration patients were treated

 

By Age and Gender

 

  • In 2012, 86.3% of all hair restoration surgical patients worldwide were male
  • In 2012, 13.7% of all hair restoration surgical patients worldwide were female
    • Since 2004, the proportion of female surgical hair restoration patients worldwide increased 20% — from 11.4% in 2004 to 13.7% in 2012
  • In 2012, 66.8% of all non-surgical hair restoration patients worldwide were male
  • In 2012, 33.2% of all non-surgical hair restoration patients worldwide were female
  • In 2012, more than half of both male and female surgical patients worldwide fell between the ages of 30 to 49 years old, 59.6% and 55.9% respectively

 

Trends by Country

 

Of the estimated 310,624 hair restoration procedures performed worldwide in 2012:

  • Europe experienced the biggest increase in the number of procedures, with 54,343 procedures performed in 2012 (a 39% increase from 2010)
  • Since the ISHRS began compiling practice data in 2004, the number of hair restoration procedures around the world jumped 85 percent by 2012
    • From 2004 to 2012, the Middle East saw the largest increase (740%) in the number of procedures
    • From 2004 to 2012, Asia experienced the second largest increase (397%) in the number of procedures

 

Trends by Recipient Area

  • From 2010 to 2012, hair restoration procedures performed on the eyebrow and face (moustache/beard) increased 13.1%
  • Asia conducted the largest amount of eyelash (601), eyebrow (5,160) and facial hair restorations (1,904)
  • The Middle East experienced the biggest gains in eyebrow hair restoration procedures (113.1%) from 2010 to 2012, followed by Europe (78.4%)
  • The largest increase in facial hair restoration procedures from 2010 to 2012 occurred in the Middle East (263.2%) and Asia (77.9%)

The objective of the survey was to gather reliable statistics with regard to the volume of hair restoration procedures performed, patient demographics, surgical techniques, treatments used, and other practice dynamics. The margin of error for the sample is plus or minus 6.5 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.

 

The ISHRS commissioned Relevant Research, Inc. of Chicago, IL, to help develop the survey instrument, collect the data, analyze the findings, and prepare the summary report.
